The course is targeted at advisers that do not want to be full time estate practitioners but want to understand the basics of:
1. Understanding the estate planning process
2. Deciding if they want to take estate planning qualifications further.
The course is made up of various modules on different areas of estate planning. Each module consists of a number of lessons and it is these lessons that will aid you in developing the skills needed to reach a sound level of understanding of the estate planning process.
The course teaches you to:
• Complete a practice marketing strategy that includes estate planning.
• Understand practice management including compliance issues.
• Learn techniques to improve your interpersonal skills which are so important in producing positive estate planning outcomes.
• Follow a process when working through an estate planning engagement.
• Recognise the necessary steps in delivering a client estate strategy report.
Course Outline
The following offers a brief description of the current modules offered in the Foundation Course.
1. Marketing Strategy
The first step in incorporating estate planning into your practice is to develop a marketing strategy. The online learning centre provides you with the assistance to create and put into place a successful marketing strategy. This module will highlight the importance of having an effective marketplace strategy, positioning statement, product and services statement, pricing statement and promotional statement. The module also provides you with access to a draft marketing plan which you may then adapt and use where appropriate.
2. Practice Management
Having a well structured and efficient practice is a key component of your success. Set up correctly it will enable you to spend more time with clients, while the practice takes care of both you and itself. In this module we look at the management of clients, staff systems and pricing. It details areas such as client engagement skills, delegation, managing work performance, adding estate planning functions, task and date management and dealing with budgets, scoping and pricing.
3. Compliance
In this lesson we detail compliance issues in the running of the Estate Planning part of your practice. We highlight the importance of risk management principles, compliance principles, your role as an adviser and your specific legal, fiduciary and personal indemnity (PI) insurance obligations.
4. Interpersonal Skills
Good communications skills are vital to your success in estate planning. Its importance in business becomes more evident the better you become. In this lesson you have the chance to test and improve your current skill levels as well as learning how to adjust your communication skills to suit different types of clients. To do this we explain issues surrounding client apathy, assessing personality types, different styles of communication including questioning and body language and rules surrounding facilitating group situations.
5. Process
This module aims to introduce you to the process needed for a successfully run estate planning practice. It will take you through establishing who your client is and determining their capacity to establishing and carrying out a review process for the solution you were able to implement. A smooth and consistent process is needed to gain any kind of result.
6. Delivery
In this module we take you through the ESTPLAN process of implementing or delivering the Estate Strategy report for clients. A well structured and methodical process will allow you to implement the signed off client recommendations in an efficient, accurate and timely manner. It introduces the three key factors to a successful delivery, which are; planning the delivery services, referrals management and review and presentation.
7. Other Modules
The Learning Centre will be updated regularly with different modules specialising in certain areas of estate planning such as Wills and The Referrer Adviser. Also included are a great number of resource documents video clips and case studies.
